Twelve nurses, one borrowed hall, every Saturday
Twelve nursing graduates of the classes 2014–2020 now run a free Saturday clinic in the harbour community hall — blood-pressure checks, vaccinations, wound care and honest health advice for anyone who walks in. No appointment, no fee, no questions beyond the medical.
The idea surfaced at a reunion picnic, when two classmates realised they lived on the same street as the shuttered clinic. Six months of permits, donations and deep-cleaning later, the doors opened — with a queue already waiting.
What the clinic offers
- Free check-ups: blood pressure, sugar, BMI and vision screening
- Vaccination mornings with the city health programme
- Wound care and medication reviews for elderly residents
- Referrals to the university hospital when needed
Who keeps it running
Rotas are covered entirely by alumni volunteers, with final-year nursing students assisting for credit. The Brotherhood pays the hall rent from the community fund; medicines come from a standing donation by two alumni pharmacists.
How to help or be seen
The clinic welcomes walk-ins every Saturday from 9 to 1. Medical alumni can join the rota through the contact desk; everyone else can help with stewarding, translation or the famous Saturday soup.
